Danzig
1906—1932
Lore Lilli Masur was born on February 6th, 1906 in Danzig, which was at the time controlled by Prussia before it became a city state under the protection of the League of Nations in 1920. Her father, Gustav Masur, was a Jewish general manager and head of human resources of “Sternfeld”, Danzig’s “largest and most modern" department store with further stores in Berlin and Königsberg amongst others. Lore married Peter Caspary, a Jewish lawyer in Königsberg , on 10.7.1928.
By 1932 she was enrolled in the faculty of law at the University of
Königsberg
where she was also a member of the socialist organization Rote Hilfe. This is when she met her second husband-to-be, August Karl Wilhelm “Ted” Kapp. As a result she was divorced from her first husband by the court in Leipzig in 1933. The court’s verdict from 20.10.1933 states that both parties were equally at fault and bear the responsibilty for this divorce. The personal correspondence from 1932-1933 indicates that Ted and Lore discussed readings of socialist authors and entertained the idea of a future life in the Soviet Union.
In 1934 Lore’s father fled, t ogether with his wife Irmgard, to the Lake Garda region in Northern Italy. This forced escape was caused by troubles that had erupted with the increasingly Nazi-controlled workers council at Sternfeld.
